The Sun Blade (にちりん, Nichirin; Viz: Nichirin) is a legendary sword forged long ago on a continent that has since sunk beneath the ocean. This blade has been passed down through generations within the council of swordsmen.

Nichirin concealed the blade within a pocket dimension of his pearl necklace and entrusted it to Atomic Samurai during the battle against the Monster Association. A similar weapon known as the Moon Blade exists as its counterpart. According to legend, a warrior possessing both the Sun Blade and the Moon Blade will gain unparalleled power.[1] The Council of Swordmasters has long pursued this legend.

Overview[]

The Sun Blade possesses a spirit that telepathically connects with its wielder, assessing their worthiness to wield its power. Additionally, when a swordsman achieves a state of extreme concentration, they can draw the Sun Blade from its scabbard, as demonstrated by Atomic Samurai.

Once unsheathed, the sword significantly enhanced Atomic Samurai's abilities, enabling him to slice through one of Homeless Emperor's largest energy spheres and even sever Golden Sperm's forearm. The blade can also become malleable and stretch to a degree. While it grants immense power to its wielder, it can also take control of their consciousness, as noted by Atomic Samurai. However, excessive use of the blade's power can lead to substantial fatigue, as Atomic Samurai experienced after clashing with Golden Sperm.[2]

Trivia[]

  • The sword's literal name, "The Nichirin [Sword]" (spelled 日輪), is pronounced the same as the name of the swordmaster Nichirin (spelled ニチリン), with both literally meaning "The Sun."
    • The swordmaster's name is spelled using katakana while the blade is referred to by its kanji, differentiating the two in the manga's text. However, because there's no official way to differentiate the two using the English alphabet, the fan translations and wiki use the literal translation of the name when referring to the sword whilst retaining the original Japanese name for the swordmaster; meanwhile, the Viz translations use the Japanese for both.
