Overview
Too slow.
— Empty Void outmaneuvering Flashy Flash.[1]

Empty Void (くうのヴォイド, Kokū no Voido), who now goes by the alias That Man (あの かた, Ano Okata; Viz: The Great One), is the founder of the Ninja Village and the older brother of Selenian Luna.[2]

Void used to be Blast's partner during his search for the mysterious cubes. After succumbing to the illusion of a cube, he transformed into a Mysterious Being and became a minion of "God".

Appearance[]

As a human, Void was lean but muscular. He had light-coloured long rough hair, which he tied in a ponytail. He wore goggles and a scarf, modern body armor, and a utility belt. He is around the same height as Blast. His light-colored hair is cut similarly to Blast apart from towards the back where it forms into a long ponytail. He wears multiple pieces of armor on his arms, shoulders, chest, and back. Underneath, he wears all-black attire including his gloves, and has multiple pieces of cloth wrapped around his torso. His two sheathed katanas are attached to his back and he has what appears to be small pouches held in place on the back of his waist.

As a Mysterious Being, Void has a monstrous appearance with spiked skin and flamed hair. He has different skin colors on different parts of his body. His teeth are all razor-sharp.[3] Initially depicted as having a skinny and emaciated physique due to past injuries inflicted by Blast, Void undergoes a substantial transformation upon absorbing divine power from Garou, becoming muscular and robust.

Later, Void displays a transformation that resembles his human appearance. His face takes on a dark hue, with what appears to be cosmic dust visible on it, somewhat resembling Garou's features in Cosmic Fear Mode.

Personality[]

Void is a cunning and manipulative individual, driven by ambitious goals to advance technology and integrate powerful abilities within the Ninja Village. He is willing to go to great lengths to achieve his goals. After the death of Dirty Stain, his disciple, he feigned tears to gain Blast's trust and sympathy. To gather information about an organization and a scientist associated with Blast, he ordered his younger sister, Luna, to spy on Blast by forming a relationship with him. This ultimately resulted in Luna becoming the wife of the S-Class hero. He also coldly told Luna to kill anyone deemed unnecessary after the investigation. After Luna's death at the hands of a minion of "God", Void began to question Blast's involvement, suspecting that Blast might have known of her role as a spy and allowed her to die. Despite these doubts, he was swayed when he witnessed Blast's genuine grief over her loss. Due to his growth as a shinobi, Void convinced himself that Luna's death did not affect him, attributing it to her weakness and failure. Despite this, it is apparent that her death had a profound impact on his psyche, leaving him vulnerable enough to fall prey to an illusion created by a mysterious cube.

As a Mysterious Being, Void continues to be a cunning manipulator, using his illusion abilities and the mysterious cube to deceive and exploit the emotional vulnerabilities of his opponents, particularly targeting Flashy Flash and Speed-o'-Sound Sonic with psychological tricks. He is also dispassionate and detached, viewing relationships as imbalanced and temporary. During their battle, he comments on the partnership between Sonic and Flash, reflecting his belief that they will inevitably drift apart, as they excel in different areas: Sonic in mental resilience and Flash in physical skill. He also appears indifferent to the ninjas who rallied for him, merely watching from a distance as Flash and Sonic eliminated all members of the Heavenly Ninja Party to assess the duo's capabilities.

After absorbing Garou's divine power, infused with the latter's dark nature, Void fully regains his senses and breaks free from "God's" brainwashing. He even forms a plan to defeat "God" that includes sacrificing himself; despite this, he still intends to kill Blast after the S-Class hero becomes aware of his plan. He also prefers to torment his opponents rather than killing them immediately.

In the webcomic, Void is depicted to be an utterly ruthless, malevolent, cunning, bloodthirsty, and despicable individual. Having been alive for more than three hundred years, he has used his powers and skills to assassinate hundreds of thousands of people over his lifetime. He is the founder of the Ninja Village and the starter of atrocious regiments children are put through, and even after founding the village, he continued to assassinate people. When killing his targets, if he comes across people with strong bodies, he will take their bodies away to (presumably) use their body parts to stay young and fresh.

History[]

At some point in the past, Void founded the Ninja Village.

Eighteen years before the start of the series, he met Blast while battling his disciple, who had become a minion of "God". With Blast's help, he defeated and killed the transformed disciple. Intrigued by Blast and his abilities, Void decided to partner with him in the search for the mysterious cubes. He then assigned his younger sister, Selenian Luna, a mission to act as a spy and get close to Blast in order to gather information about a genius scientist and the Agoni foundation associated with him. Luna's mission ultimately led her to marry Blast, and they had a son. After Luna was targeted and killed by a minion of "God" during a battle, believing she was close to uncovering the identity of Blast's secret scientist, Void began to doubt Blast's involvement, suspecting that Blast might have discovered her role as a spy and allowed her death. However, he was swayed by Blast's genuine grief over her loss.

Blast defeating Empty Void in the past

Void defeated by Blast.

Sometime after Luna's death, Void and Blast arrived at a temple for an investigation. When the temple suddenly collapsed, Blast tried to teleport them to safety, but a falling mysterious cube made contact with Void first. Influenced by the cube, Void was transformed into a Mysterious Being and became a minion of "God", much to Blast's grief. This ultimately led Blast to confront and defeat his former partner.

Empty Void in a recovery capsule

Fifteen years ago, after being defeated by Blast, he entered a healing capsule to recover from his injuries.

In the original webcomic, Void was said to be born about three hundred years ago.[3] Since that time, he honed his skills and started his career as an assassin. His unbelievable power and skills allowed him to reach the top of the assassination industry and give him enough ties to rule the world in the shadows. During this time, he killed several high-profile individuals whose names would be passed down in history.

Because of this, Void was regarded as the most powerful ninja to walk the Earth.[2] Sometime in the past, he founded the Ninja Village.[2] The village trained ninja assassins and sent them to factories of the underworld.[4]

Sometime later, Void challenged Blast, but he was defeated and put in a coma. The village placed him in a recovery capsule where he layed dormant for 15 years.[2]

Neo Heroes Saga[]

Ninjas Arc[]

The Heavenly Ninja Party talks about their goals

Void mentioned as the leader of the Heavenly Ninja Party.

While resting in his hideout, Speed-o'-Sound Sonic is approached by the Heavenly Ninja Party, a group made up of ninjas from previous graduating classes of the Ninja Village, including Gale Wind and Hellfire Flame. They tell Sonic that Empty Void, whom they refer to as "That Man," has awakened. They share their plan to eliminate Flashy Flash and Blast, elevate Void as their leader, and emerge from the shadows to dominate the world using their superior ninjutsu skills.

Later, at the Hero Association Headquarters with Saitama, Flash, Sitch, and Manako, Blast detects a surprise attack from Void, who uses his Dimension Slash, targeting the association complex. However, Blast successfully fends off the assault, safeguarding the headquarters. Blast goes on to reveal that Void had absorbed Garou's divine power following the latter's defeat at the hands of Saitama, and that Blast briefly confronted him after the power absorption but Void chose to withdraw.

Empty Void appears behind Flashy Flash

Void appearing behind Flashy Flash.

After Sonic and Flash defeat the Heavenly Ninja Party, Void uses his illusion abilities to disguise himself as Flash. In this form, he appears beside Sonic and tricks him into touching a mysterious cube, catching the ninja off guard. Flash rushes to stop this, shouting at Sonic, but is too late. Upon contact, the cube renders Sonic unconscious. Flash attacks Void from behind, but Void evades the strike, appears behind Flash, restrains his sword hand, and mocks him for being slow. He then dodges a kick from Flash and hits him in the chest with the mysterious cube, knocking him out as well.

Having soon freed himself from the cube's effects, Sonic wakes Flash up by punching him hard in the face, to Void's surprise. He comments on the dynamic between the two, that those confident in their abilities cannot maintain an equal relationship and will inevitably drift apart. Flash mistakenly interprets this as Void speaking about himself and Blast, but he clarifies that he is referring to Sonic and Flash - the former excelling in mental fortitude, while the latter surpasses in skill, resulting in a balance. Vehemently disagreeing with Void's assessment, Sonic and Flash generate numerous afterimages through their high-speed movements and charge at the ninja leader in a coordinated effort to impale him. Since Sonic has proven resistant to the cube's effect, Void decides to eliminate him.

Empty Void about to slice through a bubble

Void about to attack Sonic from outside the universe.

The duo's attack misses as Void warps himself to a hyperspace dimension outside the normal flow of causality. In this transdimensional space, he can perceive the infinite branching of parallel universes and realities of the multiverse, visualized as floating "bubbles" that he can interact with using a special technique. Focusing on the bubble containing Sonic and Flash, Void identifies Sonic as the primary target before utilizing his Dimension Slash to cut through the selected bubble, striking Sonic's location from outside the universe. Realizing the impending attack, Flash warns Sonic, who is then struck by Void's Dimension Slash that seemingly obliterates his upper body.

Witnessing Sonic's apparent death, a horrified Flash is confronted by the teleporting Void, who aims to exploit Flash's emotional vulnerability and tries to convert him into a Mysterious Being once more. Just before Void can use the mysterious cube to put Flash under an illusion again, Blast intervenes, punching him back with his Gravity Knuckle and saving the fellow S-Class hero. It is then revealed that Sonic was in fact saved by Blast as well, who had used a portal to conceal Sonic's upper body and trick Void, making it look like his upper body got destroyed. Void and Blast then engage in battle.

Void escapes to Hyperspace in front of Blast

Void escapes to the higher dimension.

In a brief clash, Void is pinned down to the ground by Blast's gravity orbs, rendering him immobile. Blast reveals that Void needs to form a hand seal with both hands to teleport to the higher dimension. Despite being restrained, Void conjures multiple energy spheres similar to the light powers of Homeless Emperor and attacks Blast, who counters by neutralizing the assault with his own similarly-sized black orbs. Sonic then attempts to finish Void off with explosive kunais, but Blast kicks them away, telling Sonic not to interfere unnecessarily. At this moment, Void catches Blast off-guard by absorbing the gravity orbs that bind him, taunting if this is unexpected for Blast. Once freed, he performs the hand seal and Blast fires two additional gravity orbs in an attempt to restrain him again. This effort fails as Void instantly teleports to the higher dimension, his laughter echoing while Blast, Sonic, and Flash watch in confusion. Void then launches a Dimension Slash from the higher dimension. Blast manages to grab both Sonic and Flash, using a portal to teleport them out of danger. The slash cleaves the ground in half, causing collateral damage that bisects mountains and clouds in the distance.

Void slicing Blast's forearm off

Void slicing Blast's forearm off.

Void soon teleports back to the scene, kicking Blast from behind and sending all three crashing to the ground. Now appearing closer to his human form, his face darkened and swirling with cosmic dust, he explains to Blast that he sensed something was off ever since absorbing Garou's divine power. He deems Garou a failed creation, stating that despite being granted power by "God", Garou harbored a dark nature that defied that power. As a result, Blast's power of darkness is ineffective against Void due to him having absorbed Garou's power. He adds that he has just recalled his rage towards Blast, which "God's" will had previously suppressed. The two then engage in a fierce exchange of blows, with Blast employing his portals to land multiple successful strikes, but this quickly ends when Void retaliates by severing Blast's right forearm.

Void slashing Blast several times

Void hesitates for a moment before cutting across Blast's body.

Despite sustaining numerous hits, Void remains relatively unharmed. With Blast's right forearm now severed, he points out that Blast can no longer teleport, as he needs to bring his fists together to do so. He mocks Blast's attempt to use portals to target his blind spot, declaring that now Blast will witness him unleash Dimension Slash to devastate the cities and their inhabitants. Blast retorts that Void is poor at lying, stating that if Void were still the same as he was 15 years ago, he would have already killed him. He attributes this change in personality to Void's absorption of Garou's power, which included the latter's essence, suggesting that "God's" brainwashing is beginning to fade. For a moment, Void hesitates before inflicting several slashes across Blast's body.

Saitama pulls Void into the ground

Saitama pulls Void to the ground.

Void tortures Blast and mocks him for only bringing disaster to those around him. As he asks whether Blast has a child, he notices the shift in his eyes. Flash intervenes with a sword strike, which he blocks. When Flash questions why he didn't target Blast's weakness knowing about his child, Void responds by slashing Flash in the chest. Sonic attempts to kick him but misses as he teleports to hyperspace again. In hyperspace, Void laments that he would prefer to torment them gradually rather than slice them apart from afar, before unleashing a Dimension Slash targeting the three. The attack is poised to kill them all, but they are saved when Saitama happens to be in its path, stopping it completely. Shocked, he uses his other dimension sword to impale Saitama, who easily catches his blade and pulls him down to the surface, confiscating both of his swords.

Blast teleports into and attempts to merge with Void

Void is forcibly merged with Blast.

Leaping into the air, Void realizes his swords are gone. As Sonic and Flash pursue him and attempt an attack, he prepares the hand seal to teleport again. However, before he can succeed, Blast teleports directly into him, merging with him. Void realizes that this fusion could tear their biological structures apart, but the light power within his body repels Blast, canceling their merging. As they land on the ground, Blast, having glimpsed Void's memories during their consciousness overlap, becomes aware of the figure whose hand Void took in the illusion projected by the mysterious cube.

Saitama punches Ninja Village Leader into ground

Saitama punches the Ninja Village Leader into the ground.

In the original webcomic, after Sonic and Flash kill the entire Heavenly Ninja Party, he is revealed to have been observing the battle go down from a nearby rooftop.

The two later arrive at Sonic's residence, where they find Saitama, sitting over a hole in the ground and holding Void's equipment. Saitama explains that Void approached him and monologued about his legendary demon blades and his immense power. He then attacked Saitama, who easily defeated him with a single downward punch, and was stripped of all of his weapons.

Abilities and Powers[]

As the leader of the Ninja Village, Void is an extraordinarily powerful individual. Right before meeting Blast, when he was still human, he fought Dirty Stain, his disciple who had become a minion of "God"; although he appeared to be at a disadvantage, he managed to hold his own. With Blast's help in destroying Stain's arm, he ultimately defeated and killed his transformed disciple, though it remains unknown if he could have won on his own.

After transforming into a Mysterious Being and becoming a minion of "God", he fought Blast, the top-ranked S-Class hero, fifteen years ago. Blast remarks that they were evenly matched, but Void gained a significant advantage after acquiring additional powers from "God". Despite this, Blast still somehow managed to defeat and leave him gravely injured.

After Garou's defeat by Saitama, which resulted in Garou losing his divine power, Void absorbed this leaked divine energy to revitalize himself from a weakened state to a significantly improved condition. This power absorption healed him from injuries sustained during his battle with Blast fifteen years ago, which had left him weakened. When discussing this incident with Sitch, Blast asserts that Void now poses an even greater threat than the Hero Hunter. Violent Force asserts that even if all members of the Heavenly Ninja Party fought him at once, Void could still handle them as if they were mere infants. In his confrontation with Speed-o'-Sound Sonic and Flashy Flash, he effortlessly demonstrated complete control over the battlefield; had it not been for Blast's intervention, Sonic would have been killed, and Flash would have been subdued.

Following the absorption of Garou's divine power, which renders Blast's darkness-based abilities ineffective against him, Void showcased his dominance in their rebattle, overpowering Blast and likely on the verge of killing him, had it not been for Saitama's intervention.

In the webcomic, Gale Wind claims that Void has a body count in the 6 figures, and that he is responsible for the deaths of many well-known historical individuals. He stood at the top of the assassin industry and ruled the world from behind the scenes. He is regarded as the most powerful ninja to ever walk the Earth by all the ninjas who graduated from the village. This is also shown by the fact that one of his scrolls contains a technique that Flash used to instantly kill Heavy Smoker, a Dragon-level threat that was shrugging off attacks from Tanktop Master.

Physical Abilities[]

Immense Speed and Reflexes: Void possesses an astounding level of speed and reflexes. His supreme mastery over ninjutsu grants him heightened swiftness and agility. For instance, he could effortlessly outmaneuver Flashy Flash, an S-Class hero known for his own extraordinary speed. Furthermore, Void has proven capable of keeping up with Blast, the top-ranking S-Class hero, who is exceptionally fast and agile in combat.

Immense Strength: Void possesses considerable physical strength, being able to effortlessly carry a mysterious cube in his hand while fighting Flash. Said cube is so heavy that it sinks into solid rock.

Enhanced Longevity: According to Gale Wind, whenever Void found a strong and healthy body, he would take all their blood and innards away from the scene to replace his organs or consume it.

Multiple hearts: Gale Wind states that Void has multiple heartbeats, indicating that he has more than one heart.[3]

Immense Durability: Void could withstand multiple blows from Blast, including those enhanced by gravity, without sustaining serious harm. It's unclear how much his body armor contributes to his defensive capabilities and damage resistance in battle.

Vacuum Endurance: Void has demonstrated the ability to remain suspended in space without suffering adverse effects. This suggests that he can survive in the vacuum of space at least for a certain duration.

Transformation: After absorbing Garou's divine power, Void revealed a transformation that resembled his human form, with a dark-colored face and what appeared to be cosmic dust within it.

Enhanced Flexibility: Void can dislocate his joints and twist his limbs and head 180 degrees, then return them to their normal positions without any visible signs of pain or discomfort. This ability allows him to catch opponents off guard when they attempt to strike his blind spot in close-range combat.

Supernatural Abilities[]

Void teleporting back to Earth from hyperspace

Void teleporting back to Earth from hyperspace.

Dimensional Travel: Much like Blast, Void has the ability to traverse between dimensions.

  • Spatial Teleportation: Void appears capable of teleporting to various locations, like Blast, but without the need for portals. However, his teleportation ability may be less versatile in combat situations. While in hyperspace, he returned to Earth at the same location as Sonic and Flash. He also appeared out of nowhere and kicked Blast as he exited hyperspace. It's possible that he must first enter hyperspace before he can teleport to a desired location on Earth, and potentially across the universe, thanks to his unique awareness and bird's-eye view in hyperspace.

Energy Absorption: Void possesses the ability to absorb energy from others. Following Garou's defeat to Saitama, he absorbed the divine energy emanating from Garou's body, which not only revitalized him from a weakened state to a vastly improved condition but also elevated his abilities to a significant extent, enabling him to fend off a few assaults from Blast shortly after. He later used this ability to absorb the gravitational orbs that Blast used to restrain him, freeing himself from their grasp. Before this, Void was unable to do so because Blast's darkness-based attacks directly countered the light power he received from "God". It was only after absorbing Garou's divine power, infused with the Hero Hunter's dark nature, that this became possible.

Energy Projection: Void can summon and manipulate energy spheres resembling those of Homeless Emperor, which he uses to attack enemies from a distance.

Flashy Flash attacking Empty Void disguised as Flash

Void disguises himself as Flashy Flash using an illusion.

Illusion Inducement: Void can generate illusions that disorient the senses of his targets, facilitating easier attacks. He used this ability to confuse Speed-o'-Sound Sonic and catch him off-guard by making the ninja perceive him as Flashy Flash.[5]

Spatial Bending: Similar to Blast, Void possesses the ability to manipulate space to some extent. With his bare hands, he can interact with and grab the fabric of space around him like a blanket, using it to hide himself and vanish from sight.

Parallel Viewing: Void can access hyperspace, a higher dimension beyond the causality of the universe, where he can perceive parallel worlds infinitely branching out with every possibility.[6] These parallel universes and alternate realities are visually represented to him as floating "bubbles" that he can observe and interact with. This ability potentially gives him insight into different timelines and variations of reality. It is also the underlying mechanism by which he utilizes his Dimension Slash technique.

Fighting Style[]

Ninjutsu Master: Being considered the strongest ninja to have ever lived, Void possesses great mastery over ninjutsu. He is proficient in the use of an absurd variety of weapons, and carries them into battle.

Void using Dimensional Slash for the third time

Void using Dimension Slash.

  • Dimension Slash (次元斬, Jigenzan): A powerful technique granted to Void by "God" that involves interference from a higher dimension. Its effectiveness depends on the user's proficiency. To use it, he forms a hand seal with both hands, which transports him to hyperspace, a higher-dimensional space outside the causality of the universe. In this transdimensional space, he perceives endless floating "bubbles" representing parallel worlds, which he can interact with using a special jutsu. After selecting a specific bubble corresponding to his intended target in the physical world, he uses his dimension sword to slice through it from this vantage point. The blade then materializes in the physical realm, enlarged, and moves toward the target, cutting through the very fabric of space, which Void deems unstoppable. In his first use, he unleashed this attack on the Hero Association headquarters, which would have destroyed it had Blast not intervened by teleporting it away. Dimension Slash causes great collateral damage with every use, including splitting surfaces, creating deep craters, and bisecting clouds and distant mountains. The blade appears invisible or transparent when manifested in the physical universe; there are instances where the technique was executed without the blade being visible, only the destruction left in its wake. The only instance it was seen (by Saitama) was when he intercepted it, and it proved completely ineffective against Saitama, who caught the blade barehanded, much to Void's shock. Furthermore, Void can use his sword to impale opponents while in hyperspace, not limited to slashing. This attack is notably difficult to dodge, as Blast requires teleportation to evade it each time. Since both hands are necessary to perform the hand seal that transports him to the hyperspace, Void cannot access it if his hands are restrained, as noted by Blast.
  • Spiraling Wind Blade (螺旋風刃, Rasen Fūjin): Void spins rapidly, delivering multiple slashes in a 360-degree radius at high speeds. This movement creates the effect of a spiraling storm of slashes surrounding him
  • Sky Ripping Scattered Flash Slash (裂空散閃斬, Rekkū Sansenzan): Void creates powerful hurricanes which he can control by spinning his sword at incredible speeds. Though he's never been seen using it, it can be implied that he can use this technique, since he carried the scroll that detailed how this move is performed.
  • Speed of Sound Electric Discharge Fist (音速放雷拳, Onsoku Hōrai Ken): Void extends his finger and pokes his opponents on the head, unleashing powerful shots of electricity and killing them. Though he's never been seen using it, it's also implied that he can use this technique since he carried another scroll that detailed how this move is performed.

Equipment[]

Swords: Void wields two swords on his back, known as Dimension Swords (次元刀, Jigentō). When combined with his strength, these swords allow him to slice through Blast's battle armor. In hyperspace, he uses them to perform his Dimension Slash.

Body Armor: Void wears modern body armor that provides resistance to damage during battle.

In the webcomic, he calls his swords the Legendary Demon Blades.

Mysterious Cube: Void keeps a mysterious cube in his possession. By either inducing someone to make physical contact with the cube, or forcibly pressing it against them, he can trigger its ability to immediately render them unconscious for a temporary duration. While unconscious, the victim experiences a vision or dream in which they encounter "God", who offers them power. He attempted to convert Sonic and Flash into Mysterious Beings using this method.

Warning Expand to see original webcomic information. Beware of spoiler content.

Shuriken: Void also carries a variety of shuriken, with many different styles among them.

Kunai: A set of Japanese knives which are common ninja weapons.

Stun Gun: An electroshock weapon for disabling attackers.

Scrolls: Void has several scrolls on him. They appear to contain the details of several forbidden techniques, as Flashy Flash took some of the scrolls left behind by him and learned a new technique.

Baton: A short bludgeon commonly used by police officers.

Pistol: Among the numerous weapons in his collection is a handgun, with two extra magazines.

Taser: A short-ranged variety of electroshock weapon.

Trivia[]

Warning Expand to see original webcomic information. Beware of spoiler content.
  • Empty Void's tendency to harvest the bodily remains of felled enemies and graft them to his own flesh parallels the practices of Kakuzu from Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto series. Kakuzu was a super ninja who would harvest the hearts of defeated shinobi and implant them into himself granting him a form of advanced longevity.
  • In the webcomic, he is said to have existed for over 300 years.[3]
